Newtown Tales - A day in the life of… Leigh

Leigh Gammon

Nissan Service Manager

5 years, 8 months? ?

What do you do at Newtown?

I’m the Nissan Service Manager at Newtown Motors, so I spend my time looking after the Nissan after sales departments within both the Cwmbran and Hereford dealerships.

How did you get your job?

I was working for the previous Nissan dealership in the area as a senior service advisor and I knew I wanted to stay with the brand when they lost the franchise. The Nissan area manager at the time mentioned a new company, Newtown Motors, were taking over and I believed it was time to take the next step on the ladder of my working career. It's been more than 5 years now and I think I'm holding my own!

What’s a typical day like for you?

Doors open at 8am until 5.30pm and just about the only thing you can guarantee is that the cars I see will have 'Nissan' on the badge! Every day holds new challenges and scenarios for my departments, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I work at both dealerships and deal with a wide range of customers to help them with concerns and any requirements they have, as well as managing the staff between the sites. Whilst it's a varied and demanding role, the hardest thing is still deciding what I fancy for lunch!  ?

Tell us one thing you’ve learnt from working here and one thing you love.

One thing my father always told me was to work hard and people will recognise you for what you do and achieve. And Newtown Motors has proved this; they really do appreciate hard-working staff. What I enjoy most about coming to work is the challenge of the role I have taken on. There’s not a day that passes in which I don’t learn something new about the industry or my team. ?

What’s your proudest moment (in work and in life)?

My proudest moment in my working life was during my first role as a service advisor for the AA; it was my first job in this industry and I was awarded Customer Service Advisor of the Year for the UK. This award was recognition of an outstanding dedication to the customer and company, which resulted in a two week all-expenses-paid holiday, plus a nice bonus on top! My proudest moment in my personal life was being there at the birth of my daughter, Summer, after a bad pregnancy for the wife. I cannot explain how proud I was to see her come into this world. ?

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

Life; that's the easy and short answer! I have always been one of those people who could never spend all day in bed. Do you need a reason to get up? Do you need a reason to live? Personally, I don’t. Although having a loving family and an alarm clock does help!

What’s the one phrase that sums up your approach to work/life?

Never put off for tomorrow, what you can do today.

Tell us something we might not know about you...

Secrets don’t exist in the motor trade! As for my personal life though, people are surprised to learn that I have sleep apnoea. During the night whilst I’m asleep, I can stop breathing several times for various lengths of time. I now use a special breathing machine, which aids my natural breathing by forcing air into my lungs. Until I met my wife, I didn't even realise I had an issue!

What do you like to do after work?

Life after work involves going home to a house of three fighting children! It’s usually a case of helping them with homework, and then trying to get them to bed on time. I wouldn’t change that for the world though as I know I’m lucky to have children. Once they’re in bed, I get to unwind from the stresses of the day by playing computer games online with my best friend, Mr Miguel, or watching a box set with the wife.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A lot of my friends and family would say that I’ve still not grown up! I always wanted to be racing car driver as a child, but at 17 that changed to being a driving instructor. So it’s always been motor related!

Tell us one thing that would be on your bucket list.

To live forever; I never plan to die! On a more serious note, I would love to be able to walk my daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.

Who would play you in Newtown Motors the Movie?

I would say either John McGinley (Dr. Perry Cox) or Charlie Sheen (Charlie Harper) but two of my staff commented that it's more likely to be Timothy Spall!!
