Newtown Tales - A day in the life of… Matthew

Every month we take a look at one of the Newtown team, following them on a typical day in our always-busy and never-dull business.

This month, Matthew gives us a peek into what’s been going on in our busy workshop.

Matthew King

Workshop Controller

6 years, 7 months

What do you do at Newtown?

It’s my job to control the work that comes into the workshop, making sure that customers get their vehicles back when they’re needed. I also carry out any electrical and diagnostic jobs that require an in-depth analysis.

How did you get your job?

My friend told me about a potential vacancy and I got in touch with the manager that same day to arrange a chat. A few days later, I was offered the position. And the rest, as they say, is history.

What’s a typical day like for you?

No two days are ever the same! There are always different jobs coming into the workshop to ensure that we’re always kept on our toes.

Tell us one thing you’ve learnt from working here and one thing you love.

Since starting at Newtown, I’ve gained valuable knowledge into how to carry out repairs effectively and efficiently whilst using the latest diagnostic equipment. One thing I really love about working here is the opportunity to work on such prestigious brands.

What’s your proudest moment (in work and in life)?

In work, my proudest moment was achieving the Gold Level Standard with Vauxhall. When it comes to my life achievements, it has to be my two sons.

What motivates you to get up in the morning?

Perhaps not a motivation as such, but my youngest son who thinks 5:30am is an acceptable time to start each and every day!

What’s the one phrase that sums up your approach to work/life?

Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try.

Tell us something we might not know about you.

I’m a huge WWE fan and have been for over 20 years; I’ve even managed to convert my wife into a fan!

What do you like to do after work?

Well, I’d like nothing more than to go home and play Fifa on the Xbox, but my two sons have other ideas so I often end up playing Lego and Minecraft.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always wanted to be in the motor trade and follow in my father’s footsteps.

Tell us one thing that would be on your bucket list.

I’d love to go and watch Wrestlemania Live.

Who would play you in Newtown Motors the Movie?

Bruce Willis!
