New season, new coach

With the new season just around the corner, Newport Badminton Club have re-launched their Junior Club along with a new session time and new age group. However, the most exciting news is the announcement of their brand new head coach, Rhys Pritchard who will be introducing a 12-week coaching programme.

Rhys Pritchard represented Wales at the Junior Commonwealth Games back in 2008 and won bronze at the UK Schools Game in 2007. He was also Wales’ number one with his junior doubles partner, so it’s fair to say that he’s qualified for the job! Unsurprisingly, Rhys is aiming to be one of the top coaches in Wales. He commented, "Badminton is a fun sport and so easy to get started, I will be coaching all the shots and techniques."

For those who don’t know, our Cwmbran branch is the proud sponsor of Newport Badminton Club. It’s one of the biggest clubs in South-East Wales with over 30 members and more than 10 juniors. The club Chairman, Mark Thomas commented, "Without the support of Newtown Motors we would not have the funds to operate the junior club, we are very grateful for their commitment and contribution.”

We’re the official sponsors of the majority of national tournaments that are organised by the dedicated volunteers at Newport Badminton Club. Our very own Neil Williams commented, "We are delighted to be supporting the development of badminton in Wales and providing opportunities for the community to participate."

The new coaching programme will begin on Thursday 8th September, with a 12-week coaching plan for each school term for children to learn every badminton shot, footwork and game play. The sessions will be held at Pill Millennium Centre and cost just £3.50 per week. The first session is free for anyone who wishes to get a taste for the sport; the club welcomes players of all abilities!
